THE UNDERNEATH

The Underneath, a collaboration between Marion Belanger and Martha Willette Lewis, was a site-specific installation for the 2018 City Wide Open Studio in New Haven, CT

The Underneath offers an enclave to consider our place in the great ecosystem that surrounds us, held by the roots that secure us, nourish us, and offer a sense of heritage and community. Martha and Marion are currently collaborating as a team on a major public art project for the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. The Underneath was inspired by the historic records of scientific root studies that they were working with at the Agricultural station. The installation will consists of scans of historic root studies, contemporary photographs of roots and compost, a video projection of worms, and root and soil samples.
